My only digital or online social networking vice would have to be the (usually short amount of) time I spend on Facebook once a day. My phone, at the ripe old age of 4 years, is too prehistoric to surf the net (no bluetooth here!), sends the occasional text, and is really nothing more than a device to make or receive phone calls (it is SO old that it actually has an antenna!). I do, however, know a lot of people who are fully addicted to "Farmville" and other random Facebook applications, who can't just let their phone beep with a text while driving, and those who interrupt meals with other real people to reply to emails on their Blackberries. With that said, I am rather bemused with this little
"Digital Cleanse" John Mayer put up on his blog for the new year...
Would it be too strange to reply to a text message with a phone call and actually speak to someone? Why does it now seem awkward to just phone someone up, but less so to send a text message? Does anyone really care to hear about what we ate for breakfast, how how we had a crappy day on Facebook or Twitter? When sitting down to a meal with family, which is more important - checking that email from your boss at work, or connecting with those people surrounding you face-to-face?
Lets hope that everyone can create more meaningful relationships in 2010... We've got to start somewhere.
